The American colonies where importing factory-made luxury products and goods from Great Britain, at the time of the Revolutionary War. In 1790 Samuel Slater built the first practical cotton spinning machine in the United states and in 1793 Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin. Soon, New England had a growing cotton textile industry. Because of the lack of soft coal the manufacture of iron developed more slowly than the cotton industry. In 1830 a process for using anthracite coal was introduced and later both iron ore and soft coal were found in western Pennsylvania.
As the nation expanded the unlimited supply of raw material and an increasing number of customers brought a rapid growth of industry. As the number of customers grew the steamboat came into the spotlight and helped workers and factory owners to transport more products and more often. In 1817 the steamboat came into general use and provided a transportation on inland waterways. A railway system was built up when the steam locomotives were introduced in the 1830s.
